tooth-replacement

Procedures and technology in dentistry, especially tooth replacement, is constantly evolving.  Historically if you are missing a tooth you have two good replacement options: a partial or a bridge. However, now we have a great third option — dental implants. Before we go any further, let’s discuss the differences between bridges vs. implants.

Bridge:

A dental bridge is a fixed appliance that uses the teeth on either side of your missing tooth to anchor it as a tooth replacement option.  Your dentist will trim down the teeth on either side of your missing tooth, these teeth are called abutment teeth. Your dentist will create the bridge that is then cemented onto the abutment teeth.

Dental Implants:

Implants are a titanium post that is surgically placed through your gums and into the bone of your jaw. In this tooth replacement option, after the implant has healed (usually 3-6 months) your dentist will place a dental crown that is either cemented or screwed into the implant post.

Pro’s and Con’s of Tooth Replacement

There are several reasons why you would choose to go with one tooth replacement option or the other.  Let’s discuss…

Bridge:

Pro’s:

  • fast turnaround time (about 2 weeks)
  • natural look
  • permanent restoration

Con’s:

  • requires other teeth (abutment teeth) to anchor the bridge
  • if the abutment teeth get decay, the entire bridge needs to be replaced

Dental Implants:

Pro’s:

  • act as a stand-alone tooth
  • do not require other teeth to anchor them in
  • permanent restoration
  • natural look and function

Con’s:

  • take approximately 6-9 months from start to finish
  • can be expensive

  • I was really relieved when you mentioned that dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. This calmed my nerves about getting a replacement for one of my largest teeth that needed extraction recently, as getting a replacement for a tooth as big as that would certainly be obvious to a lot of people. I’ll make sure I find a dentist in the area that offers dental implants right away so I can have a proper replacement.
